People ask us all the time — how does laser engraving actually work? What does the machine do? How does a name appear in wood? We thought it was time to pull back the curtain and show you exactly what happens in our Suffolk garage workshop.
What is laser engraving?
Laser engraving is the process of using a concentrated beam of light — the laser — to remove or vaporise the surface of a material, leaving behind a permanent mark. The laser moves across the material following a digital design, burning away tiny amounts of the surface thousands of times per second to create text, images, patterns, or photographs.
The result is a mark that's part of the material itself — not printed on top, not stuck on, but physically part of the wood, acrylic, or metal. That's why laser-engraved products last so long. There's nothing to peel, fade, or wash off.
What materials can you laser engrave?
At Torch & Grain we work with:
- Oak and hardwoods — our favourite. The laser burns beautifully into the grain, creating warm, rich marks with natural variation.
- Softwoods and plywood — faster to engrave, slightly lighter in tone.
- Acrylic — gives a frosted, precise finish. Great for signs and plaques.
- Leather — creates a subtle, tactile mark.
- Slate — the contrast between the engraved and natural surface is stunning.
- Metals — using our IR laser we can mark stainless steel, aluminium, and anodised metals.
How does a photo become an engraving?
This is the bit that surprises people most. When we engrave a photo onto wood, we don't just point the laser at a picture. First, we convert the photo into a greyscale image and then into a pattern of thousands of tiny dots — like an old newspaper photograph, but invisible to the naked eye at normal viewing distance.
The laser then burns each dot individually at varying intensities — darker areas of the photo get more laser power, lighter areas get less. The result is a gradated image that your eye reads as a full photograph, built up from thousands of tiny burn marks in the wood.
What happens in our workshop?
Every Torch & Grain order starts the same way. We receive your personalisation details — the name, date, photo, or design — by email. Josh prepares the artwork in our design software, lays out the text and graphics, and checks the spacing and sizing carefully before anything goes near the machine.
The material is then cut to size, placed in the laser, focused precisely, and the job is sent. The machine runs — anything from 2 minutes for a simple name to 45 minutes for a complex photo engraving — while we watch to make sure everything is going perfectly.
Once it's done, the piece is removed, cleaned, checked, and finished by hand — sanded smooth, oiled if it's oak, and inspected before we're happy to pack it.
Why does oak engrave so beautifully?
We're often asked why we use oak so much. The honest answer is that no other material engraves quite like it. The tight, varied grain of oak creates a natural texture that interacts with the laser burn in unpredictable, beautiful ways. Every piece of oak is different, which means every engraving is unique — even if the design is identical, the wood makes it its own.
There's also something about the warmth of oak that feels right for personalised products. It's not cold or corporate. It feels like something that belongs in a home.
