If you've never heard of a lithophane, you're about to have your mind blown. It's one of those things that's almost impossible to describe in words — you really have to see it to believe it.
So what exactly is a lithophane?
A lithophane is a 3D printed panel made from translucent filament. When you hold it up in normal light, it looks like a beautiful frosted tile. Switch on an LED light behind it and suddenly your photo appears in stunning, glowing detail. Every shade, every expression, every texture of the original photograph is captured in the thickness of the 3D printed layers.
It's not a print. It's not a canvas. It's something entirely different — and once people see one lit up, they can't stop staring at it.
How do we make them at Torch & Grain?
We start with your photo. Using specialist lithophane software, we convert the image into a 3D model where light areas become thin and dark areas become thicker. The result is a relief that, when backlit, recreates the original photo with extraordinary depth and warmth.
We 3D print every panel in our Suffolk workshop using high-quality translucent PLA filament. Each panel takes between 4 and 18 hours to print. Once printed, we fit it into our LED frame and test it before dispatch.
