What Is Laser Engraving? A Complete Guide to How It Works and What It Can Do

You've probably seen laser engraved products — the name on a keyring, a photo on a piece of timber, a logo on a trophy. But how does laser engraving actually work, and what can it do? Here's everything you need to know.

What Is Laser Engraving?

Laser engraving is the process of using a focused beam of light to remove or alter the surface of a material — burning away or vaporising the surface to create a permanent mark. Unlike printing, which sits on top of a surface and can fade, peel, or scratch off, laser engraving goes into the material itself. It is genuinely permanent.

The laser beam is controlled by a computer, which means it can reproduce any design, text, logo, or photograph with extraordinary precision — down to fractions of a millimetre.

What Materials Can Be Laser Engraved?

The range of materials that can be laser engraved is broader than most people realise. At Torch & Grain we work primarily with:

  • Oak and hardwood — our most popular material. The laser burns a dark, rich contrast into the warm grain of the wood.
  • Slate — the laser creates a beautiful light-coloured mark on the dark stone surface, perfect for cheeseboards and coasters.
  • Walnut veneer — used for our earrings and smaller decorative pieces.
  • Acrylic — gives a frosted, highly detailed engraving, brilliant for signage.
  • Leather — the laser burns a deep, permanent mark into leather surfaces.
  • Coated metals and anodised aluminium — great for keyrings and tags.

What's the Difference Between Laser Engraving and Laser Cutting?

Laser engraving marks the surface of a material without cutting through it. Laser cutting uses a higher power setting to cut completely through the material — allowing shapes, letters, and patterns to be cut out entirely. Many of our products use both: the shape is laser cut and the personalisation is laser engraved.

Can You Laser Engrave a Photograph?

Yes — and this is one of the most remarkable things laser engraving can do. By varying the power and speed of the laser across thousands of tiny points, it's possible to reproduce a photograph in extraordinary tonal detail on wood, creating what we call a photo on timber. The grain of the wood becomes part of the image, giving it a warmth and texture that no print can replicate.

How Long Does Laser Engraving Take?

Depending on the size and complexity of the design, most of our products take between 10 minutes and an hour to engrave. After engraving, we hand-finish each piece — sanding, oiling, or treating depending on the material. We typically dispatch within 3–5 working days of receiving your order and confirming personalisation details.

Is Laser Engraving Permanent?

Yes. Because the laser removes or alters the material itself rather than applying something on top, it cannot fade, peel, or scratch off. A laser engraved oak house sign will look the same in twenty years as it does the day it's put up. That's why we say everything we make is engraved to last.
